You say "latest", but what's the number?
I had a problem recently, where the latest driver that I could select graphically was still ancient and didn't work. A newer (but still old) version was only available from the command line, and caused some other problems that required their own fixes. Once I got through all of that, I no longer had the error messages, and everything worked.
